Yin yoga is a slow meditative type of yoga where poses are held for 3-10 minutes. The poses are passive and use gravity and the weight of the body to slowly sink deeper into each pose.
On a physical level, Yin yoga helps stretch the connective tissues of the body (ligaments, tendons and fascia) and helps lubricate the joints. Yin yoga can help release emotions and traumas that have been trapped in the body.
Yin yoga is for everyone. We spend a good part of our lives active in body and mind. Yin forces us to slow down, to feel what is uncomfortable and listen to our inner voices.
In yin yoga we use blocks, blankets and bolsters to either help deepen or decrease the intensity of the poses. You may bring your own props or use the ones in the studio.
My Yin-Yang yoga class begins with some Yin poses followed by a Vinyasa flow. This class is meant to help balance the cold energy of Yin with the warm energy of Vinyasa. It's also a nice way to sample Yin to see if you would enjoy a Yin only class.
